Hollis Richardson

Hollis Richardson The distinctive style of Hollis Richardson captures his interest in and empathy for people. His figures are distinct personalities, although they are never portraits of a particular person. They represent aspects of humanity that seem to charm and delight their creator. Sometimes they move the viewer to quiet contemplation or even sadness. It is the essence of the situation that the artist puts his efforts into, rather than the detail of realism.

Hollis works spontaneously from his imagination, without detailed plan of forethought. His intent is directed to mastering the elements of design, creating colors and shapes, that balance, create tension and harmony. The artist’s figures, their activities, environment and expression flow freely from his subconscious, and are not usually a matter the artist can explain, even to himself. They are unrestrained expressions of a soul that is deeply empathetic and compassionate toward the human condition in its full range of emotions.

Raised in rural southern Oklahoma in large family, the only pictures on the walls were calendars. However, as a child, Hollis spent considerable time and efforts learning to draw. His interest in art was encouraged in college with formal art instruction and blossomed even further with travel to Europe after college. In Europe he visited the great museums of the world and viewed first hand the paintings of the old masters. He was particularly intrigued with the work of Van Gough and his contemporaries. He has since relentlessly perused oil paintings striving to make each piece an even better work of art.

Hollis’ interest in people and their culture are a result of his varied experiences: a child migrant worker in California, a teacher of Navajo Reservation, s soldier in the last days of Korean War, life in Germany and France as a teacher in Army schools, a school teacher in rural Idaho and a mental health worker for many years in California and Colorado. His observations of human nature and his love of oil painting have consistently intermingled over the course of his lifetime.

Hollis now devotes himself full time to his art, pursuing artistic excellence and expressing his appreciation of people who strive to maintain dignity and positive attitude in a complex world. His art has achieved national recognition and can be found in homes and offices of discerning collectors throughout the United States.
